It isn't immediately obvious, but when you cross the road from the National Garden to Panathenaikos Stadium you are actually crossing a river. Once an open waterway, the Ilissos River now runs underneath the traffic. In the 18th century, young women left offerings on the river banks to ensure they got a good husband, while a statue of Venus looked on. There are plans to raise the river and put the traffic underground, but even as it is, this is a delightful place. The gardens are a beautiful green escape from the buzzing Athens streets
